A to Z of women’s health HER2

H – HER2

All women diagnosed with breast cancer should be tested for HER2 – a protein found on the surface of some cancer cells that plays a role in stimulating them to divide and grow. Around one in five women with breast cancer have HER2 positive tumors. These tend to grow more quickly than other types of cancer but respond well to Herceptin, a new drug that has been shown to be effective in women with early or advance breast cancer. The drug is expected to be licensed soon.
